1882 Broadsheet Tribute to America's Great NewspapermenWE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS - NOT REPRODUCTIONS
Title:
Representative Journals and Journalists of America.
Description:
This rare broadsheet is Gustov H. Buek's tribute to America's great newspaper men. Published by Root and Tinker in 1882, this broadside celebrates 12 of America's greatest newspaper editors and owners superimposed upon front page facimies of their newspaper. At center, a portrait of Thurlow Weed, the retired editor of the
Rochester Telegraph
and the Albany Evening Journal, appears in the center of the print with no representative facsimile. The newspapermen represented include
George W. Childes of the
Public Ledger
, Philadelphia
Whitelaw Reid of the
New York Tribune
Henry Watterson of the
Louisville Courier-Journal
E. B. Haskell of the
Boston Herald
Charles A. Dana of the
New York Sun
Murat Halstead of the
Cincinnati Commercial Gazette
Joseph Medill of the
Chicago Tribune
James Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald
Victor Fremont Lawson of the
Chicago Daily News
Oswald Ottendorfer of the
New Yorker Staats-Zeitung
Joseph Roswell Hawley of the
Hartford Courant
Royal M. Pulsifer of the
Boston Herald
Thurlow Weed of the
Albany Evening Journal
, New York (center)
George Jones of the
New York Times
is conspicuously absent, but the firm did release an updated version of this broadsheet in 1885, in which Jones is included. When Root and Tinker initially issued this, in 1883, Wilbur F. Storey of the
Chicago Times
appeared in place of the current example's Victor F. Lawson. Some have associated this with the publication of a second edition of the broadsheet to promote the Travelers Insurance Company although there is no clear association with that organization present here.
This broadsheet is quite rare. In addition to the example exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum in 2016, we are aware of only two other examples at the Library of Congress and the Connecticut State Library.

Shipping:
Shipping rates are not negotiable. Items are shipped within three business days of receiving payment. We are happy to consolidate shipping where possible. The following shipping options are available:
1. FedEx Overnight (45 USD). USA Only. Signature Required.
2. FedEx Ground or Home Delivery (15 USD). USA Only. 1 - 10 days. If your address is a P.O. Box and cannot ship FedEx we will ship USPS Priority and, while we ship promptly, recent postal personnel cutbacks mean that delivery may take time. Signature Required.
3. FedEx International or DHL International EXPRESS (45 USD).
4. We can use your FedEx Account.
Customs:
International buyers are responsible for paying duty and taxes on delivery. DHL or FedEx will contact the buyer by telephone to arrange tax payment if it is levied. Duty varies by country and we cannot predict the amount you will be charged. Some countries are duty free, others are not. Typically, a customs duty and/or VAT tax will be assessed on all parcels to continental Europe. Sometimes duty or tax is due in China, but is seems very random. Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan have never assessed duty on a map we shipped. Maps shipped to the UK should be duty free as educational materials, but from time to time duty of 5% is assessed incorrectly by the UK customs agents.
Insurance:
All shipments are insured privately against loss and damage. All of our shipments require a signature for insurance purposes.
